Programme Overview:

The purpose of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is to “cap” an undergraduate degree. The PGCE is a one-year professional teaching qualification. The PGCE: SP & FET aims to develop graduates as competent, professional teachers, committed to the enhancement of education in diverse high schools in South Africa and beyond. PGCE: SP & FET graduates will be equipped to teach: One subject at FET level (grade 10 to 12) and one subject at Senior Phase level (grade 7 to 9). Successful completion of the PGCE will allow candidate’s admission to the BEd Honours or Postgraduate Diploma in Education qualifications (NQF level 8).

Subjects requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree, with the required school related subjects at the compulsory levels. • Candidates must have passed at least one school approved specialisation subject at third year level (NQF 7) and one school approved subject at second year level. • English (home language or first additional language) AND Afrikaans or isiXhosa (home language or first additional language). • Passed Computer literacy (completion date not older than 8 years). • Applicants must have obtained a minimum average of 60% for their undergraduate degree. Subject Specialisation requirements: • Creative Arts: Applicants must have passed one of the components of Creative Arts at NQF7 in their undergraduate degree, with a minimum of 60%. These components include: – MUSIC (Playing an instrument, choral work, conducting). – VISUAL ARTS (Art, ceramics, design). – DRAMA (Drama, Acting, Film, Script writing). – DANCE (Dance, movement, physical theatre). • Economic Management Science: Applicants must have obtained a minimum average of 60% for the commerce modules completed in their undergraduate qualification (Accounting, Business Studies, Economics). Applicants must have completed at least one of the three Commerce specialisations at first year level, one up to second-year level and one up to third year level (NQF7). • English Home Language: Applicants must have completed English literature modules up to third year level. • Life Orientation: Applicants must have obtained a minimum average of 60% for the Psychology modules in their undergraduate degree. Applicants must have completed a combination of Psychology and either Sociology, Philosophy, Political Science, Human Movement Science, Labour Studies or Industrial Studies in their undergraduate degree, at least one of which should have been completed up to NQF7. • Life Science: Applicants must have completed two of the following subjects up to NQF7: Biological Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, Biology and/or Zoology, as well as Biology (Botany and Zoology) up to NQF6: • Music: Applicants must have completed a music-specific degree, which includes music theory/ composition up to NQF7. Applicants will be expected to complete an admissions test. • Natural Science: Applicants should have completed at least three of the following subjects up to NQF6 (second year level) – Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physical Geography/ Environmental Sciences, and/or Physics. • Physical Science: Applicants must have completed Physics and Chemistry, one up to NQF6 and one up to NQF7. Please note: Any method subject(s) in the PGCE programme will only be offered if a minimum of 20 students registers for the method subject.

This programme provides an introduction to Sustainable Energy and Renewable Energy Technologies. The course includes carefully selected applied Mathematics, Science and Engineering content to fast-track learning to the required level. The purpose of this programme is to equip students with the necessary skills to function in a supporting role to an engineering team in the renewable energy sector comprising artisans, technicians, technologists, and engineers. This programme is offered for students wishing to major in accounting, auditing, taxation and management accounting. The accounting programme is intended for students who do not wish to qualify as Chartered Accountants but who may wish to join the other professional institutes such as the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA),the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners and the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA), and yet wish to include accountancy subjects as majors in their degree. Take note: The part-time offering of this qualification is subject to a sufficient number of registered students.

The aim of the programme is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and values needed to effectively mediate learning in the field of Senior Phase and Further Education and Training, specialising in specific school subjects. Students will be expected to choose two FET specialisations and one related SP specialisation within the stream below. NATURAL SCIENCE STREAM: FET: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences*, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy SP: Mathematics, Natural Sciences *Please note that students choosing to study Physical Science MUST choose Mathematics as their second FET specialisation. To specialise in Mathematical Literacy applicants must have taken Mathematics at school.
